Stephen Farrugia

Dr Stephen Farrugia is a registered Naturopathic Doctor (ND). His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Complementary Medicine and Health Science and a postgraduate Bachelors of Complementary Medicine, specialising in Naturopathy.

His passion for holistic medicine and a healthy lifestyle eventually led him to leave a career as a young executive in the business world to pursue and complete full time studies in natural medicine at the highest level. He strives to keep himself updated on the latest information and techniques in his field and continues to attend courses in functional medicine, botanical medicine, nutrition, supplementation, meditation and tissue manipulation.

Dr Farrugia’s approach to medicine is both clinical and functional. He uses standard Pathcare laboratory testing and specialized GIT testing through Synexa laboratories combining modern medical science diagnostic techniques with holistic wisdom to identify root causes of disease. He has a special interest in chronic disease particularly the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypercholesterol, obesity and IBS.

Dr Farrugia applies functional, naturopathic principles into each treatment protocal, where the goal is to remove obstacles to health and develop the patient’s natural immune system into functioning optimally and then restoring each system of the body. This requires working with the patient in a process to identify and eliminate the deep root causes of their symptoms and then follow restorative protocols to return the body to optimal health. Ultimately this is what differentiates naturopathic medicine from other medical treatments, meaning that the symptom on its own is not the target for intervention, but the overall health of the patient is improved by removing root obstacles in the diet and lifestyle, by reducing unnecessary supplementation and toxic habits and gently enabling optimum function of each organ system. This also enables Dr Farrugia to work with the current medications and protocols patients may already be on.

Personally, Stephen leads a dynamic and active lifestyle. He remains involved in corporate as a director at Breezewood Beauty Products, a business he shares with his wife and business partner. Stephen enjoys outdoor sports of all nature and is a keen marathon and ultra marathon runner. He is a family man in every sense of the word and his wife, young daughter and spiritual beliefs are the foundations around which he builds his life.

What is Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is a distinct, integrated system of primary health care offered by licensed physicians. It consists of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human disorders by the therapeutic use of natural methods and materials. In South Africa, a Naturopathic Doctors (ND) studies 5 years at university level earning two degrees including two years of work with patients in a clinical setting. Their therapeutic interventions include botanical medicines, supplementation, therapeutic nutrition, physical manipulation, acupuncture and lifestyle intervention.

Naturopathic philosophy follows the principle of nature cure, which acknowledges the unique healing ability of the natural body by treating disease through the removal of obstacles to health and the stimulation, increase, and support of the individual’s inherent healing capacity. This process identifies root causes of disease. Modern naturopathy combines the diagnostic procedures of medical science such as physical examinations, laboratory blood tests, urinalysis and imaging techniques with the ancient wisdom of holistic medicine, providing unique insight into root causes and disease patterns. Naturopath’s are trained to communicate and work in harmony with allopathic medical doctors, and acknowledge the vital role of referral when necessary.
